 BodyPUMPTM Q and A

 What is it?

Q. What is BodyPUMP?
Body PUMP is a strength and endurance workout that brings the weight room into a Group Exercise class.  You will be challenged by various tempo changes in movement, not only will you improve strength, but also you will be adding endurance to your weight-training workout, which can yield up to 600 calories burned in one class.
Q. How many times a week is recommended?
We recommend 2-3 times a week.  Mixing this class into your regular routine will help you see a change to your body.

Classes and Participation

Q. When are classes offered?
A. We have classes offered at 6 am; morning hours 9:30 and 10:00; LUNCH TIME 12:30; early and late evening and weekends.  Check our Group Fitness Schedule under BodyPUMP.
Q. How many people can you accommodate?
A.  39 participants:  We have equipment to accommodate 39 class participants and 1 instructor. Please set up your bench (platforms and steps) on the floor markings.  The floors are marked for 39 to allow the appropriate execution of all exercises without interfering with another participant.  Although the room may look full when you peak in, if there are bars still on the equipment racks, there is a spot for you in the room.
Easy/Hard
Q. I only took one class, “it felt easy”; “it felt too hard”.
A.  We recommend taking the class 3 times to determine the weight usage for your body.  We recommend going light as opposed to heavy for the critical reason of proper form and body alignment.   Weight can be added as long as you have the proper execution, body alignment and maintain good form.
Felt too easy?  Really listen and look to your instructor for their cues on body positioning and what to do and not to do.  Listen to the recommendations of adding weight based on the various exercises.  For example, Squats should have the heaviest weight of all.   Biceps will have ½ to 2/3 less weight of squats.  You should not be using the same weight for all body parts.
Felt too hard?  Once again, listen for the cues.  Poor body alignment can make things really difficult.  If it doesn’t feel right; chances are it is not right.  Make certain you adjust the weights appropriately.  Listen for the recommendations from the instructor and go lighter until you have the comfort level of the new movement.
ALWAYS APPROACH THE INSTRUCTOR AFTER THE CLASS IF SOMETHING DIDN’T FEEL RIGHT OR IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS.  WE ARE HERE TO MAKE YOU SUCCESSFUL!

Music and Movements

Q.  It is hard for me to follow the slow movements, than quick and combos. Why can’t I just do the same speed of movement?  What is the purpose of the changes?
A.  NO, please do not do the same speed of movement.  There is research behind this program that yields greater results due to strength and endurance training.  This is an example of why we use the same music and class formats; muscle and mind memory.
Slow movements take more strength to execute.  Quick movements rely on endurance.  When we combine these movements together and independent of each other within exercises for each muscle group; we obtain the best results for the muscle appearance.  We shock the muscle by using different tempo changes, which yields better results in physical appearance and overall strength.  Not to mention the cardiovascular component of this strength workout
Q. Why does every instructor use the same music and same routine?
A. The essence of BodyPUMP is to have movement to music with the class being choreographed for success.  The mind and body has recognition when the same movements are performed over and over again.  Especially with the amount of weight used and the need for proper body alignment, the first few months for the new participant are critical to execute movement properly.
Q. Will the instructors use other music?
A. Each ¼ there will be a “new release” and launch celebration as we had when we first introduced the program.   Again, to get used to the new exercises introduced and body alignment/form necessity, all the instructors will use that music for a few weeks. As each instructor builds their library of music, mixing and matching of prior releases can be achieved.
